Device

OBD = on-board diagnostics, the vehicle's diagnostic system. SmartWheels connects to the standardized OBDII port to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and other engine/vehicle data.

The device plugs into the vehicle's OBD2 port and is powered by that port while driving. When parked, the device monitors battery health and periodically checks in with servers.

Typically within 3 feet of the steering wheel under the dashboard above the gas or brake pedal. Reach under the dash to find the connector.

Most vehicles from 1996 onward with a standard OBDII connector are supported. The device IMEI is printed on the back of the device.

Yes — it's plug-and-play. When moved, the device detects the new vehicle via VIN and recalibrates. The system creates a vehicle profile automatically.

The device powers from the OBD-II port while connected and requires no separate charging. Connecting third‑party diagnostic devices to the OBD port is standard practice.

Installation

Yes — installation is plug-and-play: simply plug into the vehicle's OBDII port.

Without GPS the device cannot determine location or record trip data. GPS is also needed for the device's initial date/time on first startup.

Check the device LEDs: red = power, blue = GPS (solid when latched), green = network (solid when online). Also confirm vehicle data appears in the app/portal.

Improper installation may cause loose connection, data loss, false alerts, or excessive accelerometer readings. Try unplugging/replugging first and contact support if issues persist. Common causes: no cellular coverage, unplugged device, or GPS problems.

Software

We continuously improve the platform (no client install required). We support modern browsers and mobile OS versions; updates are handled server-side and appear automatically.

Data is encrypted with SSL/TLS in transit. Access is controlled by the customer and audited. For full details, consult our security policy guide.

Yes — set speed limits in the app and receive alerts for violations. The map refreshes every 10 seconds in the browser; device update intervals may vary by driving behavior and device state.
